Projects/Civil Works/Quattroventi Electrical Plant demolition

Quattroventi Electrical Plant demolition

Client

Ente Autonomo Porto di Palermo

Period

August 1984 - May 1985

Description

The demolition of the ex-electrical plant Quattroventi is a singular work among these executed. The Ente Autonomo del Porto di Palermo (Palermo Port Authority) decided to demolished this building and its chimneys to obtain more areas for its containers terminal.

The works were realized by the building implosion technique, which is the controlled demolition of structures in which the strategic placing of explosive material and timing of its detonation in the structure of the building allow that a structure collapses on itself in a matter of seconds, minimizing the physical damage to its immediate surroundings.

Previous explosive works were realized to demolish the bases of the three turbines.

After the controlled demolition of the main building, the three chimneys were collapsed with the same technique.

The implosion of the ENEL plant Quattroventi in Palermo has been the biggest controlled demolition in Italy since 1985 in which the entire structure collapses on itself in one explotion: 150.000 m3.

The building implosion works were realized with the assistance of Tecnomine s.a.s. from Piacenza (Italy) owned by Mr. Zandonella.
